WORLD SURFERS FIND THEIR
PLEASURE IN THE EXTREME

Britain's most northerly mainland town, Thurso in the North Highlands will once
again welcome surfers from across the world this spring as they take part in the
O'Neill Highland Open by Swatch.

The event, taking place on Thurso East Beach from 23 April until 30 April, has a
maximum rating on the World Qualifying Series (WQS) tour of a six star prime event
making it one of the most lucrative competitions for surfers to earn vital
qualifying points for a place on the following year's ASP World Tour.

Thurso's reputation as surfing destination is as legendary as its testing location -
at 59 degrees north it's a different environment to some of the other locations on
the circuit with ice cold waters and the Thurso East reef break providing a long
right-hand barrel.

North Highland Tourism is preparing to welcome both competitors and fans with a
typically warm Scottish welcome in a region of such diverse natural beauty that
places mountains and world-class surf alongside culture, fine food and drink and
history. There is something for everybody in the North Highlands no matter how you
prefer your action - from walking and mountaineering to mountain biking and surfing.

Visitors planning their trip to Thurso for the event can find out more by clicking
onto the website for the North Highlands at www.northhighlandsscotland.com . A
perfect place to pull together the extensive information about the region, the
website includes accommodation information covering the full range from top quality
hotels, guest houses and B&Bs to self catering lodges and caravans.

Also available is information on travel links, eating out as well as details and
images of the wider area that makes up the undiscovered gem of the North Highlands -
in case you'd rather whet your appetite before you wet your board!
